Five CNC machining cost drivers: a buyer's quote comparison guide

Compare material and stock, geometry, setups, tolerances and inspection, plus volume and downstream requirements without assuming a fixed unit price.

Key engineering considerations

01

① Material and stock; ② Geometry and tool access

Material grade, condition, blank dimensions and sourcing terms all affect the cost basis. Parts with similar finished dimensions may require very different amounts of material removal or machine time. Narrow deep pockets, small internal corners, long holes and inaccessible faces can call for different tools, cutting strategies or secondary operations. These constraints are why part size alone does not determine machining cost. Values published as one supplier's minimum wall thickness, standard tolerance or process limit should never be represented as a universal industry guarantee, or as verified capacity at RayTech.

Compare quotes using the same material specification, blank assumptions, critical features and tool-access constraints.
02

③ Setup and fixturing; ④ Tolerance and inspection

Features spread across multiple sides may need additional setups, datum alignment and fixturing. Close tolerances can affect cutting conditions, inspection methods, measurement frequency and documentation effort. Identify functional fits and key features rather than asking for exceptional precision on every surface without a reason. A request for a dimensional report, material certificate or first-article record must specify its scope and responsible issuer. Such services should never be assumed available from a particular supplier without independent confirmation.

Hold the drawing revision constant and compare the same setup assumptions, critical tolerances, inspection requirements and acceptance records.
03

⑤ Quantity, finishing and delivery scope

Setup and programming costs may be spread across a larger order, but increasing quantity does not guarantee a lower unit price in every manufacturing situation. Finishing, cleaning, packaging, independent inspection, freight, applicable taxes and delivery terms can change the overall commercial amount. Compare what is included and excluded; do not compare one supplier's ex-works unit price with another's delivered price as though they represent the same service. Currency, quotation validity and lead time require an actual reviewed offer.

Request an itemized comparison of machining, setup, inspection, finishing and delivery assumptions. A target delivery date is not a confirmed commitment.
